The one square kilometer forest depicted in the main story is real. I have spent the last ten years doing real-life level art, with axe, chainsaw, shovel and tools, in order to clear the main paths, lay out new trails and junctions, highlight animal tracks, collect branches, and manage storm damage.

The forest was walked from one end to the other with a GPS, in order to trace every trails with precision.
The result was adapted and applied on a grid, then patiently converted into pixel art, 8*8 being the base unit of my tileset. Each base unit corresponds to an identifier which will be used to convert and automatically generate the 3D map, that perfectly fits the 2D top-down version, with the right tree, at the right place.

(for example, tile#H12A08 is a 8*8 pixel tile that represent the bottom-left part of a fern bush)

might be compared to the original THE LEGEND OF ZELDA - LINK'S AWAKENING for it's second screen,
showing a classic top-down action adventure point of view of the game. This is a tribute to one of the best video game ever made.
